Mouthwashing – Psychological Horror done RIGHT

mouthwashing logo

Imagine you are part of the crew on a freighter spaceship, just going through a routine shipment. Now imagine your ship has crashed, access to all your life-saving resources has been cut off by emergency foam. The captain has been horribly mutilated in the crash and is unable to communicate, and your newly self-declared captain is a massive jerk.

Now imagine, you go to find out what you were even transporting aboard the Tulpar. Pony Express wouldn’t tell you, so it must have been important, right? Now imagine after all that torment, the possibility of death, the despair everyone on board must be feeling… That the super important secret cargo you where transporting was… Mouthwash.

You’d go a bit crazy too.

Mouthwashing is the second video game released by developer Wrong Organ, their first title being a surreal horror game titled How Fish Is Made, when you play as a sardine, flopping around uncomfortable and gross environments as you ponder the questions of your fishy existence. Mouthwashing was originally announced as a free update to How Fish Is Made, followed by a demo released for Steam Next Fest in February of 2024.

Mouthwashing was published by Critical Reflex, who readers might be familiar with for their publishing of Buckshot Roulette earlier this year, which is basically just Russian roulette except you have a shotgun. (And multiplayer is coming this week, so round up your buddies to see who lives and who dies)

The game was released on Steam in late September and since then has taken the internet by storm, with over 5,000 Overwhelmingly Positive reviews and a wave of Youtubers and Twitch Streamers showing off the game. It has already gained a cult following, with people creating fan-edits, cosplaying the characters on their socials, and so much art being created based on the game.

The game features a low-poly graphic style that lends itself to the game by allowing us to focus on the story and deeper core messages without being hyper-focused on details. Johanna Kasurinen, the Art Designer for the game stated in an interview with Rolling Stone that “we don’t need state-of-the-art graphics to make something impactful.”

The game is cinematically structured, playing out almost like a movie through a nonlinear disjointed story, skipping back and forth to different scenes in different times throughout the journey from the crash to the inevitable end.

This game is a true example of psychological horror done RIGHT, without relying on asylums or extreme mental health conditions to push their scares. The story surrounding this game feels real. The characters feel real, and their lives are at stake. As you play through this game and through Jimmy’s slow descent into madness (Along with the rest of the crew), you’ll uncover the truth about the crash, about the horrible things that have happened aboard the Tulpar, and about the horrible things that are yet to come…

Take Responsibility for your crimes. Take Responsibility for your wrongdoings.

Take Responsibility.

You can find Mouthwashing on Steam https://store.steampowered.com/app/2475490/Mouthwashing/ (TW for all the usual psychological horror things, as well as implied but NOT shown SA)

I rate Mouthwashing: What the F*CK JIMMY!?!? Out of 5.
