The Wild Robot – Spoiler free review

I had the opportunity to attend the preview screening of The Wild Robot, and let me tell you, this movie exceeded my expectations. I was excited to see this film from the moment I saw the trailer, and I was not disappointed.

The film is written and directed by Chris Sanders (known for his work on many fantastic animated films, including How to Train Your Dragon, Lilo & Stitch, The Croods) and based on Peter Brown’s book series by the same name. It follows the story of ‘Roz’ (Lupita Nyong’o), a helper robot who finds herself washed up on an island full of nothing but untouched wildlife. She forms a tense but beneficial friendship with a shifty fox named Fink (Pedro Pascal), and they work together to raise a gosling named Brightbill (Kit Connor) who imprints on Roz.

This movie will hit you right in the feels, as it goes through the motions of learning new

behaviours, the cycle of life, and the idea that anyone can change their ‘programming’ if they’re dedicated to the task.

With even more voice talents such as Bill Nighy, Stephanie Hsu, Mark Hamill and Matt Berry, this film has a star-studded cast who do such a fantastic job telling this story.

The Wild Robot is reported to be the final DreamWorks movie to be made in-house, with all future films being outsourced, which makes this one a little extra special. With a beautiful painterly art style and gorgeous scenery, the film will have you in awe the entire time.

The stunning visuals are paired with an equally stunning soundtrack, with the score being composed by Kris Bowers. This marks his first score for an animated film, having previously composed scores for films such as The Color Purple, King Richard, and television shows like Bridgerton.

This film shows a heartwarming story about learning to change your programming and becoming something bigger than yourself. Learning to be a mother and a friend, learning to overcome unfortunate circumstances, and learning to be kind to others even if they might not be kind to you. Truly a film for all ages, and something everyone should experience while it’s on the big screen.

I rate this movie: Cried at the beauty of the scenery, and then cried at the beauty of the story out of 5.
