THANK YOU
Thank you for even considering contributing, the fact you're thinking about becoming a contributor is amazing!
mOB Pop-culture is a grassroots website (publication? collaborative?) that will rely on voluntary content contribution from passionate people within the gaming, convention, esports, streaming and the wider nerd community - at least to begin with.
Our dream is for this website to become the "one-stop-shop" to keep up to date with pop culture news relevant to Australia - completely independent of larger corporations.
We want our home to be safe. Both for the people that frequent it, and safe from external interests shutting things down!
Our hope is that one day the site and whatever ventures that may spawn from it can provide enough revenue that we can pay our contributors and, eventually, have actual staff.
Now, full disclosure: We have ideas for monetization in the future and plan to route all earnings back into the website itself before we take any sort of payment. Everyone at the table needs to eat first, since you'll be the lifeblood of this website and its community.
SNEAK PEEK
• What is mOB?
mOB has always been a collection of creative minds. From the inception of the name back in 2017, all the way through the creation of content in the gaming and pop culture space, the plan has always been to bring passionate people together to create amazing content and inspire others to do the same.
This website is a celebration of all things pop culture in Australia and abroad. You'll find things to read and watch and occasionally to get involved in.
• Why this website?
Emma and Liam have worked in the creative industries for a combined 20 years. Throughout this time, content that we've produced naturally developed into documentary style videos and films, with feature length documentaries appearing on national TV. Another facet that naturally developed is news coverage, which melded journalistic pursuit with documentarian content.
Combine this with professional photography that's appeared in national publications and magazines, a love for writing and a true passion for all pop-culture related industry and collaborative work... You get the picture. This website kind of combines all of that into one space with (hopefully) equally passionate content creators contributing their voice and vibing together on a big, nerdy journey.
• What will you do? What do you offer?
We'll keep doing what we've always done and make an obscene amount of content! Though, we'll be refocusing slightly to make sure it all works for the website.
On top of creating content, we'll also be facilitating for our creators as much as possible. Through our decade of experience in nerd spaces, we've managed to gather some great contacts and have a large network to be able to get things done.
A few examples:
Indie developers are always needing exposure through written articles, let's plays and other content - and we're regularly provided opportunities to play unreleased titles and create content for them.
We also attend almost every convention that comes to Melbourne, and occasionally we're known to fly interstate for them. Should you feel that creating convention based content would be in your interests, we may be able to facilitate a media pass.
Have you got an idea for a piece of content that explores a complex narrative that requires interviews with industry professionals or relevant content creators? This is something we've facilitated for professional productions many, many times.
Alongside all of this, we're happy to provide advice, guidance or mentorship to our contributors in any of the areas we're experienced in. Should you require help in how to film a video, how to coordinate an interview, how to plan your narrative, or anything else related, we're happy to lend a hand!
• What can I do?
Well, what do you want to do? What is something within pop-culture spaces that you've always wanted to give a go?
Have you thought about becoming a game reviewer? Do you think you'd have fun as a film critic? Do you have a burning desire to share your love for cosplay? Would interviewing indie developers be awesome? Is convention season the only time you truly feel alive?
(Help, I called myself out with that last one).
In the most basic sense, either writing or creating video content would be, in a word, HUGE.
We're also extremely aware of and have a proper action plan to properly credit anyone who provides content to mOB Pop-culture. Feeling like you don't get the recognition you deserve when people consume the content you create is kind of a nightmare situation for us. For this reason we're going to plaster your name and social links all over the article you write, or the video you submit. We're also working on a way to list our contributors on a kind of "credits" page to go alongside this.
You could also simply provide content you've created for us to host on the website alongside your own personal channel(s).
We'll also no doubt have organisational and less creative tasks that need to be done as well.
The possibilities, whilst not infinite, are extremely numerous!

If you've gotten this far... Congratulations and thank you!
